Cinematography: Realising Vision
Presented by MIFF Accelerator, the art and secrets of cinematography are explored with cinematographer Laszlo Baranyai and writer/ director Grant Scicluna of MIFF Premiere Fund-supported Downriver, which world premieres at MIFF 2015.
Two of Australia’s most promising practitioners, Baranyai and Scicluna worked together on the short Hurts Rescue (MIFF 2014). Baranyai’s other credits also include Matthew Saville’s Noise, starring Brendan Cowell. Scicluna also wrote and directed short film The Wilding which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was a Teddy Award finalist, and won the City of Melbourne Emerging Filmmaker Award at Melbourne Queer Film Festival for Best Australian Short in 2012.

Acting Masterclass: Kerry Fox
Fresh from working together on the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported Downriver (which world premieres at MIFF 2015), actress Kerry Fox and writer/director Grant Scicluna explore the unique relationship and the dynamics between an actor and director. Presented by MIFF Accelerator, this session explores how actors choose their roles and collaborate with directors and how directors gain the trust required of the actor and how both navigate the dynamics of auditions, script changes, rehearsals and sets.
Fox came to global attention in Jane Campion’s acclaimed An Angel at my Table (1990), followed many quality titles including Gillian Armstrong’s The Last Days of Chez Nous (1992), Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave (1994), Berlin Best Actress-winning Intimacy (2001), Jane Campion’s Bright Star (2009) and PJ Hogan’s Mental (2012).

Composing: David Hirschfelder
Presented by MIFF Accelerator, the art and intricacies of film score composing are explored in this Masterclass with acclaimed composer David Hirschfelder. Recognized globally as one of Australia’s most distinguished composers, Hirschfelder’s credits include Shine, Elizabeth, Strictly Ballroom, Australia, The Railway Man, The Water Diviner and, most recently, the adaptation of Rosalie Ham’s novel The Dressmaker.

Editing Masterclass: Mark Atkin
Presented by MIFF Accelerator in association with Australian Screen Editors, the art and secrets of film editing are explored in this masterclass with editor Mark Atkin who edited MIFF 2015 Opening Night film Force of Destiny by Paul Cox. Across his long and varied career, Atkin’s other editing credits include high-end TV drama (The Slap), family TV (Nowhere Boys), feature documentary (Strange Birds in Paradise: A West Papuan Story) and comedy (John Safran vs God).

Production Design: Creating Worlds
Fresh from working together on the MIFF Premiere Fund-supported Downriver, Production Designer Penny Southgate (whose other credits include Lake Mungo, and TV Kath and Kim and Offspring) and writer/director Grant Scicluna (whose other credits include Berlin International Film Festival-selected award-winning short The Wilding) explore in this MIFF Accelerator session how production designers collaborate with directors to bring the world of the film to life.
