ACTING: Hugo Weaving 
Fresh from his mesmerising performance in the Premiere Fund-supported ROOSTER, actor Mark Leonard-Winter’s feature directing debut which MIFF-2023 world-premiered in Competition for MIFF’s $140k Bright Horizons Award, Hugo Weaving (who also starred in Premiere Fund-supported films Lone Wolf  (2021) and 2019’s Measure for Measure) explores the unique relationship and dynamics between actors, directors and cameras – and more – in conversation with Leonard-Winter (who acted in Premiere Fund-supported titles Little Tornadoes (2021) and 2009’s Balibo) and Screen International’s ANZ correspondent Sandy George.

EDITING: Cameron & Colin Cairns 
Melbourne-based screen-writing/directing brothers Cameron & Colin Cairns (MIFF 2012 Premiere Fund-supported 100 Bloody Acres and 2016’s Scare Campaign) explore the art and secrets of film editing having added editing to their job-list on their third feature together – the 1970s-set found-footage thriller mockumentary Late Night With the Devil (playing MIFF 2023 after SxSW world premiere).

The craft of cinematography is explored by Director of Photography Craig Bardem, whose diverse credits include Wog Boys Forever, TV-favourites Five Bedrooms, Nowhere Boys and Wentworth, and THE ROOSTER, actor Mark Leonard-Winter‘s MIFF Premiere Fund-supported feature-helming debut world premiering at MIFF-2023 whilst also competing for MIFF Awards‘ $140k Bright Horizons Prize.

SOUND DESIGN: Tristan Meredith
Inspired by the minimalist sensibility of dialogue-free silent cinema, MIFF Premiere Fund-supported MEMORY FILM: A Filmmaker’s Diary is an immersive cine-poem drawn from director Jeni Thornley’s 30-years of super-8 archive, that came to sound designer Tristan Meredith (who also sound-designed previous Premiere Fund-supported title ABLAZE) essentially as a silent film. Exploring the art of sound design, and processes of collaboration in filmmaking, veteran cinema journalist Sandy George examines the working relationship and creative choices underpinning the completed film.
